Generations of Mobile Standards

Working Groups go to GOA

Feb 09,2026

The 3GPP Working Groups of TSG CT and TSG SA are meeting this week in the West coast State of Goa. It is India’s smallest State, but one of great beauty and historic significance.

The 3GPP Organizational Partner the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) is hosting the meetings from the 9th to 13th February, with around eight hundred delegates, representing 240 member companies from over 55 countries.

The two groups in Goa this week cover Service and System Aspects and Core Network and Terminals for 3GPP. This week’s discussions are expected to focus on both 5G-Advanced specification maturity and on the first studies around Use cases & Service requirements and System architecture for 6G.

This week also sees some of the specialised Working Groups kicking-off their efforts on 6G studies, covering:

  • Security (WG SA3)
  • Media aspects & services (WG SA4)
  • Management and Orchestration & Charging Aspects (WG SA5)
  • Application Enablement (WG SA6)

The 6G study items discussed here, alongside the Radio Working Group’s work in Gottenborg this week, will form the foundation for future 6G specifications, in the releases beyond Rel-20.

In a press release on Monday, February 9, the TSDSI acknowledged the achievements of bringing 3GPP to India for WG and Plenary meetings. Their release says:

“TSDSI has been bringing 3GPP meetings to India regularly in its endeavour to enable domestic innovators by reducing their logistical and resource barriers for participation and contribution in development of global mobile specifications”.

The release also thanked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of External Affairs for their continued support in hosting the meetings. In addition, TSDSI thanked meeting sponsors Apple, Keysight and Tejas.
