Generations of Mobile Standards

In Memory of Dr. Carolyn Taylor

Dec 18, 2025

We are deeply saddened to share the news of Dr. Carolyn Taylor’s passing. Carolyn was a valued member of ETSI’s Mobile Competence Centre (MCC), where she supported 3GPP RAN4 for years with dedication and expertise. Last summer, she embraced a new challenge by taking on 3GPP RAN1 — a role she was truly excited about. Her enthusiasm for this opportunity reflected her passion for our work and her commitment to excellence.

Carolyn was known not only for her professionalism but also for her warmth and joy. Her smile and positive energy brightened every interaction. She worked tirelessly for the groups she supported, earning the respect and appreciation of delegates and Chairs alike.

Carolyn spent much of her career in 3GPP standardisation, as well as being a researcher with patents registered in her name. Her first taste of 3GPP was when she was seconded to ETSI by Motorola for almost four years, from 1999 to 2003, to work in MCC. Following that she returned to Motorola but continued to work in standardisation, becoming 3GPP RAN-5 Vice-Chair for a period, before moving to ZTE, again to focus on 3GPP. She finally returned to the MCC team at ETSI in 2021.

Carolyn’s contributions strengthened our team and the broader 3GPP community. She will be sorely missed by her colleagues in MCC, across ETSI, and by everyone who had the privilege to work with her.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Carolyn’s family and loved ones. We honour her memory by continuing the professionalism, dedication, and kindness she exemplified.
