Dr. Younsun Kim has been elected – by acclamation - as 3GPP TSG RAN Chair at today’s opening session of TSG RAN#107 meeting, in Incheon, Korea. Younsun Kim is a Master (VP of Technology) in Samsung Electronics, he has been serving as 3GPP TSG RAN WG1 Chair since 2021, having previously been the group’s Vice-Chair (2017 to 2021).
As RAN WG1 Chair, he successfully managed and led the technical discussions on a wide range of topics for the specification of the physical layer interfaces for UE and LTE & 5G NR accesses. His term as the Working Group Chair saw the successful delivery of Rel-17, completed despite the challenges of the Covid 19 pandemic and Rel-18 - the first 5G Advanced release.
Younsun Kim succeeds Wanshi Chen, who served two hugely successful terms as TSG RAN Chair.
Enrico Buracchini (TIM-Telecom Italia), Jerome Vogedes (AT&T) and Xutao Zhou (vivo) were all elected to the position of TSG RAN Vice-Chair - for the same period.
The newly elected RAN leadership will take the reins from RAN#108 in Prague, June 2025 for a term of two years, up to and including March 2027 plenaries.
