Lifetime Achievement, second award presented

On Monday of last week, the 3GPP RAN2 Chairman - Richard Burbidge - presented Don Zelmer with the 3GPP Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the project.

Don Zelmer has participated in 3GPP since our creation, attending over 600 TSG and WG meetings and taking on the Rapporteur role for several study and work items, including work on Public Warning Systems (PWS), future FDD HSPA Evolution and for the introduction of the UMTS850 (Band V) in to 3GPP specifications.

He has served as Vice Chair of 3GPP TSG RAN (1999-2009) and now attends TSG RAN & RAN WG#2 as a lead AT&T Delegate. Don regularly attends the 3GPP Project Coordination Group (PCG) and Organizational Partner’s meetings, as a member of the ATIS delegation.

In addition to his leadership in 3GPP, Don has regularly served as Chair of the ATIS Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee (WTSC), which is one of the primary North American drivers into 3GPP.


Video Interview - On 5G Core Stage 3 Work

In our second video from the TSG#78 meetings, December 2017, Georg Mayer gives an update on the CT aspects of the 5G network, covering the Stage 3 level work for the completion of areas such as Slicing, the Service based architecture and the necessary transport protocols. 

The interview touches on these topics and brings in details of the significance of RESTful and the possible use of QUIC transport and security protocols from Release 16 onwards.

Submission of initial 5G description for IMT-2020

Following the ITU-R Workshop on IMT-2020 terrestrial radio interfaces, in October 2017, 3GPP groups are now working on the initial description of the 3GPP 5G solution - based on LTE evolution and the first 5G NR specifications approved in December - has now been sent over to the ITU in accordance with the IMT-2020 submission and evaluation process.

The editors of the Initial “Description template of 3GPP 5G candidate for inclusion in IMT-2020”: (Wu Yong, Huawei and Asbjorn Grovlen, Ericsson) have provided a summary of the technical characteristics of the 3GPP 5G solution.


Lifetime Achievement Award

The first 3GPP lifetime achievement award has been presented to Andrew Howell, of the UK Home Office, in recognition of his commitment and leadership over the lifetime of the project.

Andrew was elected Vice-Chairman of CN1 Working Group, responsible for core network radio protocols, between 2001 and 2005. In 2005 he was elected Technical Specification Group GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) Chairman, a post he held until 2007 in his first two terms, followed by re-election in 2009 - serving until 2014. That same year, Andrew was instrumental in the setting up of a new group in 3GPP, for Mission-critical applications. He convened the first SA6 Working Group meeting and chaired it through its initial meetings.


System architecture milestone of 5G Phase 1 is achieved

The past two years have seen the 3GPP 5G architecture work progressing from the study period in 2016 to the delivery of a complete set of stage 2 level specifications. By achieving this milestone in 3GPP Release 15 the 5G system architecture has been defined - providing the set of features and functionality needed for deploying a commercially operational 5G system.
