Updated & amended December 12, 2019

Our speaker at the Wednesday speakers club, during TSG#86, Dirk Kretzschmar of TÜViT, presented some of the new directions for ICT security protection against criminal attacks at all levels of the system.

Dirk Kretzchmar described the cyber threat spectrum – from hackers, insiders, organised crime, espionage, terrorists up to the Nation State and acts of war. The presentation looked at how various sectors have an interest in understanding the common criteria that they must establish to protect data and equipment.

TUVIT slideFor 5G security – He observed that the evolution from component based networks to virtual functions and software defined networks has raised a new set of challenges. He introduced the secure ‘campus model’ that can be used for ‘sliced’ services for a variety of industry sectors.

Dirk Kretzchmar advocated the use of the Network equipment security assurance scheme (NESAS) – the presentation highlighted that such a scheme can provide a security baseline of evidence that network equipment satisfies an approved set of security requirements.

Using NESAS and establishing an effective cybersecurity certification process will help various sectors to build on the work of 3GPP’s security output, and to make sure that 3GPP Security Assurance Specifications (SCAS) and Security Architecture and Procedures for 5G System (TS 33.501) are fully implemented.

Thanks to our speaker: Dirk Kretzschmar, Managing Director, TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH (TÜViT).
