Join a 3GPP Group

The 3GPP Working Procedures (Section B) describe how participation in the groups is organised.

Most delegates participate via their organization’s membership in one of the seven SDO Organizational Partners in 3GPP. See the links below for more information on the groups structure, Getting in contact with the MCC and about Guest and Full Membership.

Here are some "Quick start" tips to help you get into the groups:

You know which Group

That is easy – go to the 3GPP Group section of the website.

On the Working Group page you will find the terms of reference, meeting details, officials, mailing lists, etc. for the group of interest.

Get used to the Portal

You can obtain most information without logging in to the 3GU portal. However, some important functions such as allocating and uploading documents (TDocs) or draft Specifications can only be done when logged in using your On-Line (EOL) account credentials. The access rights you get when logged in depend on your function in 3GPP. The following roles are defined, and these are listed in order of increasing rights:

  • Delegate: can see details of Release milestones, can reserve numbers for most types of TDoc and upload those TDocs.
  • Rapporteur: a delegate who also has the additional ability to reserve TDocs of type "draft TS" and "draft TR" for Specs for which they are the rapporteur (assuming those specs are still in draft mode, not yet under change control).

If you are new to 3GPP, get youself an EOL account, to participate in meetings and to start contributing.

You have the specification title or the feature name

Here, it is worth starting with the Work Plan. The most used version of that is the Excel sheet, which is updated every three months.

Getting an overview of a Release

If you want to align a certain release with the technologies covered, the 3GPP Release descriptions are a good place to go.

The Work Plan manager produces a complete "initial state" (pre-Change Request state) of the Features, as the definitive descriptor of the full content of the Release.

Start here, and select a release web page of interest or go directly to the destription (TR) :

You have the Specification (TS) or Study (TR) number

Start from the Specification series page. From there, you can drill down to the group, the topic and the related deliverables.

Contact the 3GPP Support Officer

The 3GPP Support Team called Mobile Competence Centre provides support to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project. If you have a question about a specific Group's work - Start there.

info@3gpp.org may also be able to help you get to the right group or spec.
