The Mobile
Broadband Standard

Alain Sultan

After graduating from the French "Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité (Supélec)" in 1994 with a specialty in Telecommunications, I completed my military period by working for a year in signal processing at the French Air Force R&D "Centre d'Essais en Vols" near Paris. I then joined France Telecom R&D Centre in Paris, where I represented FT for four years in defining the network architecture of third generation mobile systems, both at ETSI (SMG12) and at ITU (SG11, WP3).

Since 1999, I have relocated to the South of France where I have been working as a private consultant, with ETSI/MCC as my main customer and teaching in several engineer schools. At ETSI, I started supporting SMG 12 (which later became 3GPP SA2), editing the "Network Architecture" Technical Specification and contributing to it.

In parallel, I introduced the 3GPP Work Plan (a project management approach aiming at ensuring the overall work co-ordination for all the 3GPP Groups), which I ran for 8 years, setting the content and publication dates of 3GPP's Releases 4 to 8. Since 2005, I have progressively introduced and ran the same methodology in ETSI's TISPAN, in charge of defining the Fixed Network. Now, I have passed on the relay in the handling of both "Fixed and Mobile" Work Plans.

Currently, my ETSI activities are focused on supporting 3GPP SA1 (the group in charge of the Services Definition), ETSI MSG and TFES (the ETSI Technical Committees in charge of adapting the 3GPP standard into European norms) and ETSI Railways Telecommunications (the group in charge of defining the use of GSM in trains).
