48% growth in HSPA devices since October 2009

The number of HSPA mobile broadband devices launched in the market has soared to 2,579 according to the latest survey published this week by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), and represents more than 48% expansion since October 2009. The number of suppliers increased from 190 to 235 in the same period.


The Promise of Mobile Broadband

"Recognising the Promise of Mobile Broadband", a White Paper from the UMTS Forum, is now available from their web site.

The paper looks at the potential impact of LTE on the ecosystem and "..examines some of the technological, operational and strategic options available to mobile operators as they seek sustainable new business models and fresh sources of value."

"Recognising the Promise of Mobile Broadband" also summarises developments on ITU's IMT-Advanced process, where 3GPP Partners are proposing LTE as the basis from which 4G Standards will evolve (LTE-Advanced).


110 Operators move to LTE Networks

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has published an update to its Evolution to LTE report which confirms 110 operators in 48 countries are currently investing in LTE networks.

80 operators have made firm commitments to deploy LTE networks in 33 countries (compared to 64 network commitments identified two months ago).

GSA anticipates that up to 22 LTE networks will be in service by end 2010, and at least 45 are expected to be in service by end 2012. The first LTE networks entered commercial service in December 2009 in Norway and Sweden...


Indian Operators in Partnership with 3GPP

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) became a Partner in 3GPP during the 3GPP Partners meeting on the 22nd April.

T.R. Dua, Deputy Director General, addressed the meeting and accepted Market Representation Partner status in 3GPP on behalf of the COAI. He said:

"We have closely followed the work done by 3GPP in evolving the GSM technology towards LTE…the work is of key importance to Indian Operators, all of which place high importance on the need for India’s market requirements to be taken in to account during the standardization process”.



Moving to LTE - ATIS Webinar, May 4, 2010

ATIS - The North American Standards Partner in 3GPP - have an on-line webinar scheduled for May 4, 2010, at 10:00 EDT.

Hank Kafta, AT&T's VP for Network Architecture will speak along side 3GPP's Adrian Scrase, to discuss the implications of the Freeze of 3GPP Release 9, and how it delivers the full feature set for LTE networks.

The Webinar will be moderated by Keith Mallinson, of WiseHarbor, himself a leading expert and analyst in the field of mobile telecommunications.
