World Congress wrap-up

The following review of events at Mobile World Congress, highlights some major themes from this year's event.

Article reproduced by kind permission of Maravedis-Rethink:

By Caroline Gabriel, Research Director

The dust has settled on another Mobile World Congress, another year of massive overspending and overeating in sunny Barcelona, but also the key event for defining the terms of mobile industry debate in the year ahead. Behind the glittery handset launches and the fluffy talk of ‘5G’, there are plenty of deals being done – heavy duty haggling with suppliers, regulators and standards bodies. And operators will gather intelligence and insights to help make the next critical decisions for their challenging 4G business.

Next Gen Converged Operations

October 7, 2013

The NGMN Alliance's NGCOR project – covering Converged Operations Requirements – is the subject of a second demonstration to be held at the TM Forum Digital Disruption conference in San Jose 28th-31st October. The event is all about the "Converged Network", and is set to show how isolated islands of operational control in today's cellular networks can be converged efficiently.

ETSI Summit on Future Mobile and Standards for 5G

small cellNovember 25, 2013

The ETSI Future Mobile Summit has heard how the mobile internet will evolve over the next ten to fifteen years, and how 3GPP systems will ensure future stability as the network copes with an explosive growth in complexity and usage.

With 3GPP providing the evolutionary framework for mobility, via its Releases of new functionality and features, the more radical thinking, at the Summit, came in the form of Research projects and some future focused industry initiatives, such as the WWRF, the METIS Project and the DVB Project.

From Macro to Small Cells

June 25, 2013

pres smallcell3GPP RAN1 Chairman, Matthew Baker, has given a presentation entitled "From Macro to Small Cells: Enhancements for Small Cells in 3GPP" to the Small Cells World Summit, in London. He told the audience that "The 3GPP LTE and HSPA systems have supported small cells alongside macro cells for some time, but enhancements for small cells have now been specifically prioritised as a key component of Release 12 of the standard."

LTE for Critical Communications

Paris, 24th May 2013.

The ’Critical Communications World’ conference, held recently in Paris, has focused largely on the case for LTE standardized equipment to bring broadband access to professional users, by meeting their high demands for reliability and resilience.

Balazs Bertenyi, the 3GPP SA Chair, reported on the latest status of the first 3GPP features for public safety, in particular those covering Proximity services (Direct mode) and Group call. He spoke of the need to strike a balance between more or less customisation, to make use of commercial products while meeting the specific requirements for Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR).

To ensure that these needs are met, Balazs Bertenyi called for the wholehearted participation of the critical communications community in 3GPP groups, by sending the right people to address the technical questions and obstacles that arise during the creation of work items.
