Workshop on 3GPP submission towards IMT-2020

Brussels, October 24/25, 2018

3GPP will hold a Workshop aimed at informing the ITU sanctioned Evaluation Groups, policy makers and interested experts on the progress of the 3GPP work to meet and exceed the performance requirements for IMT-2020 radio interface technologies. The Workshop will be hosted by The European Commission, in Brussels.

3GPP receives a warm welcome at Gold Coast Plenary

The welcoming speeches of the 81st 3GPP Plenary meetings included an inspiring traditional indigenous people’s 'welcome to country'  from Luther Cora, who brought a personal and very human greeting containing his people’s best wishes to all of the visitors to these lands this week.

The Australian Secretary of Communications, Mike Mrdak added the Government’s voice to the warm welcome. Mr. Mrdak told the assembled TSG RAN and CT delegates “Investment in technology is for long term gain, it takes years to design and build the networks of the future… The work you are doing here this week is important to a nation such as ours, because you are setting the standards that enable the next generation of investment… We all carry the responsibility to make clear decisions, with less uncertainty and that specifically help regions and communities to have opportunities in the future.”

The CEO of Telstra, Andrew Penn also welcomed 3GPP to the Gold Coast, he said “We at Telstra are proud to host this week’s meetings – the first time that you have held the plenaries in Australia… An important part of our work is to ensure that standards take Australia’s unique conditions in to account. This is a large modern country with challenging demographics; 5G standards need to work here.” On 5G he told the meeting “We now have the challenge to plan for the unknown, as 5G enables things that we have yet to imagine. It is no wonder that the eyes of the world are on your work.”

Lifetime Award goes to Security Specialist

The 3GPP lifetime achievement award has gone to Günther Horn in recognition of his contribution to the work of the SA3 - Security Group, as forty-two SA3 colleagues submit a joint submission for this popular award nomination. 


3GPP 5G Security

In December 2017, the Non-Standalone (aka. NSA) specifications for 5G new radio (NR) were approved, followed in June 2018, by the Standalone specifications – completing the radio part of 5G Phase 1 (3GPP Release 15). The 3GPP Security Working Group (SA3) has been involved from the outset of the work. In this article we briefly introduce security for both Non-Standalone [1] and the Standalone NR 5G system [2].

The 5G system is an evolution of the 4G mobile communication systems. Accordingly, the 5G security architecture is designed to integrate 4G equivalent security. In addition, the reassessment of other security threats such as attacks on radio interfaces, signalling plane, user plane, masquerading, privacy, replay, bidding down, man-in-the-middle and inter-operator security issues have also been taken in to account for 5G and will lead to further security enhancements. This article gives an overview of 5G Phase 1 security as described in Release 15 specifications [1,2]

Technical Journal articles on 3GPP 5G

3GPP experts have generously contributed to a special “3GPP 5G Specifications” edition of the Journal of ICT Standardization, by River Publishers.

The diverse range of the 5G work within 3GPP groups is reflected in the Journal. Two articles “5G NR radio interface” and “NG Radio Access Network (NG-RAN)” take the reader through the work on NR, the coexistence of NR and LTE and how the specifications contribute to the IMT-2020 goals for a futuristic 5G network.

Another area of significant development is the 5G Core Network (5GC) and overall system. “The 5G System Architecture” article here offers an introduction and explains some of its key characteristics.

In “Path to 5G: A Control Plane Perspective” some of the most significant system developments from earlier generations to 5G are considered in more detail.

RESTful APIs for the 5G Service Based Architecture” explores how the 5GC internal communication has been specified using a RESTful design, and explains how the protocols and interfaces developed provide opportunities for future integration with other systems.
