3GPP Initiates Common API Framework Study

As we seek to provide standards for integration with a growing range of ‘vertical’ business sectors, 3GPP has initiated a new area of API specification work. 
At our March 2017 Plenary meeting (SA#75) a new Study on Common API Framework for 3GPP Northbound APIs was approved and now the SA6 Working Group – responsible for application layer functional elements and interfaces - has started investigating the topic. 

5G Communication for Automation in Vertical Domains

A new SA1 study item on requirements for automation in verticals focuses on critical communications as an enabler for wireless control loops. Once complete, the group will have identified the normative 3GPP work needed to deliver 5G for automation in a variety of industries.

3GPP RAN Elects New Chair

Balázs Bertényi of Nokia Corporation has been elected RAN Chairman this week, gaining the majority needed at the second round of membership voting. He succeeds Dino Flore of Qualcomm Inc., who has served the maximum number of two terms as the Chairman (note 1) of TSG RAN – which has responsibility for radio aspects, functions, requirements and interfaces for all 3GPP networks.

5G-NR workplan for eMBB

A major decision was taken this week in RAN on the 5G New Radio (NR) workplan. In particular, the group agreed to have an intermediate milestone for the early completion of the Non-standalone (NSA) 5G NR mode for the enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) use-case. In Non-standalone mode the connection is anchored in LTE while 5G NR carriers are used to boost data-rates and reduce latency.

With the updated workplan, NSA will be finalized by March 2018.

5G service requirements

In Jeju South Korea, SA WG1 has completed its first normative specification on “Service requirements for the 5G system” (TS22.261), which will now be submitted for approval at the Plenary meeting of the Service and System Aspects Technical Specification Group (TSG SA#75), 8-10 March 2017.

The specification contains requirements on performance targets and basic capabilities - characterized by:

  • Support for fixed, mobile, wireless and satellite access technologies
  • A scalable and customizable network that can be tailored to requirements from multiple services and vertical markets (e.g., network slicing, Network Function Virtualization)
  • Resource efficiency for services ranging from low data IoT services to high bitrate multimedia services
  • Energy efficiency and battery power optimization
  • Network capability exposure to allow 3rd party Internet Service Providers and Internet Content Providers to e.g. manage network slices, and deploy applications in the operator’s Service Hosting Environment
  • Indirect connectivity from a Remote UE via a Relay UE to the network, and service continuity between indirect connections and direct connections.

3GPP TS22.261 defines performance targets for different scenarios (e.g. urban macro, rural macro, indoor hotspot) and applications (e.g. remote control, monitoring, intelligent transport systems, and tactile interaction), for example:
