| The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaborative Agreement
between Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) and other related bodies for
the production of a complete set of globally applicable Technical Specifications
and Reports for a 3G System. The membership
is open to: all national/regional Standards Development Organizations irrespective of
their geographical location (Organizational Partners
OPs); all organizations that can offer market advice and a consensus view of
market requirements (Market Representation Partners
MRPs); Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) who have the qualifications to
become future Organizational Partners (Observers). Whilst the Organizational Partners determine the general policy and strategy
of 3GPP, the running of the Project is performed by the Project
Coordination Group (PCG). Under the PCG lie four Technical Specification
Groups (TSGs) (Services and System Aspects (SA), Core Network and Terminals (CT), GSM EDGE Radio Acesss Network (GERAN) and Radio Access Network
(RAN)). Each of these TSGs has a number of working
groups populated by individuals from companies that are members of one or more
of the OPs, MRPs or Observers. 3GPP has no legal status, but the 3GPP results are jointly owned by the
Organizational Partners. It is the responsibility of the Organizational Partners
to transpose the results into their own regional deliverables (e.g. Standards). The support function of the project is the Mobile Competence Centre
(MCC) located in Sophia Antipolis, France. The project is also bound by working procedures
3GPP Working Procedures The Work Plan is a living document, aiming at providing co-operations
between all the 3GPP TSGs and WGs to help them reaching common targets. For more information go here. The project
